Case study: three applications off SQL Server, and the estate suite that came with them

Client
A North American insurance-services firm.

Challenge
Three applications running on SQL Server, with the operational logic sitting in procedural code and ETL packages rather than in the application layer. The database was not the only thing that had to move.

Solution
95 tables, 12 views, and 113 stored procedures converted. Roughly 11.6 GB of data, including a partitioned load of tables over 5.2 million rows. 13 to 15 SSIS packages rebuilt as Airflow pipelines. Every conversion decision written to an audit log, which is what made human review of the converted objects tractable rather than open-ended.

Result
The engagement did not end at cutover. It left behind a permanent estate-management suite their operations team runs against today.

How is this different from a hosted or serverless CockroachDB service?
A hosted service runs the database in the vendor's environment on the vendor's terms. Maxima operates your cluster inside your own cloud account, under your security boundary, with your code staying in your repositories. You keep the deployment, the scripts, and the exit path. What you buy is the operating team, not the tenancy.
What is included?
24/7 monitoring and incident response, schema evolution and index maintenance, performance tuning against agreed latency baselines, backup and disaster recovery with rehearsed restores, certificate and secret rotation, version and patch management, and monthly cost governance. Delivered against a RACI matrix with named escalation paths.
How does pricing work?
A monthly retainer per service tier, sized to the estate rather than to hours worked. You receive a classified inventory stating the cost and duration to manage each database class, so the run cost is a known number before you commit rather than a monthly discovery.
Do you support the free Enterprise license?
Yes, and the operational consequence of it is worth stating plainly. Cockroach Labs' Enterprise Free license covers businesses with less than $10M in annual revenue, counting the parent company and all affiliates, and clusters on it are throttled after 7 days without sending telemetry, with throttling capping concurrent SQL transactions to 5. In a locked-down network with no egress path, that reads as a database failure a week after deployment. Telemetry egress is part of the operational design we validate at onboarding.
Can you take over a cluster we migrated ourselves?
That is a common starting point. The operations review covers topology, survival goals, index and primary key design, and the slow-query profile, and it usually surfaces one or two design decisions inherited from the source schema that are worth changing before they become incidents. Sequential primary keys are the most frequent finding.
